New Buses

Murtons took delivery in May 2009 of a new Daewoo BH117L/Chiron 57 pax school bus - It is fleet no 11 and replaced one of the ex Ventura Leyland Tigers. The Daewoo is in a new livery and incorporates a revised logo - all who have seen it seem to have been suitably impressed. Apart from the comfort of air-conditioning, this bus rides on air suspension and has everything from the entrance door to the engine monitored and controlled by a series of the latest high-tech computers.

The Daewoo bus is shown on the right.

Late in 2009, Murtons took taking delivery of 2 x BCI 6980 advanced low-floor buses to operate the Town Service. These midi buses have 35 seats (18 seats of which are in the "flat floor - stepless area), with 2 wheel chair positions + 25 standing passengers allowed. The carrying of a wheelchair passenger reduces the seated capacity by 3 seats (per wheelchair).

So, one of the benefits for passengers is that over half of the interior of these buses is available without having to climb a single step – great for passengers with prams and shopping trolleys and much more space for those passengers in wheelchairs.

The BCI’s are fitted with a 6.7 litre Cummins diesel engine driving through a 6 speed Allison automatic gearbox with retarder. Like the Daewoo, these buses will come with the latest computerised operating technology to minimise fuel usage and pollution.

The buses are 9.8metres in length are air-conditioned, ride on air suspension and have those unusual large European style mirrors and electronic destination displays – a first for Broken Hill.

They replaced the 2 x Mercedes 815D's which were 3 years old and at capacity on some services - they seated only 29 passengers (or 27 with a wheelchair on board) + only 4 standing passengers, so their use was somewhat restricted.

A photo of one of the BCI Town Service bus is shown left - at a well known location in Broken Hill.
